Swaffham Forest (TF772097)

DIRECTIONS

Areas of the forest with public access can be found east of Swaffham off the A1122 Downham Market road, and also south of Swaffham around the villages of Cockley Cley and Drymere.

Swaffham Forest is part of Thetford Forest and covers a vast area.  Reaching this particular grid reference will get you into the forest but does not guarantee any bird species mentioned on this site.  The forest is a working forest and so, depending on the stage of rotation you may encounter anything from open space to mature forest.  Species that have been recorded in different parts of the forest have included: Crossbill, Golden Pheasant, Woodlark (very good numbers), Nightjar (good numbers), Green and Great-spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Long-eared, Barn and Tawny Owl.

Woodlark have increased tremendously over the last few years and they can be found from Swaffham south into the Brecklands.
